As an entrepreneur, I’ve always been excited by innovation, change and progress; I love seeing the outcomes for those that embrace improvements against the status quo. I salute those that stand up for believing that “there is another way or a better way to do something”.
I am equally dismayed by the cynicism of the masses that dig in their heels and resist change and refuse to consider an alternative to “the way it’s always been”. That said, I do also laugh on occasion at what those same cynics are missing out on! As a quick side story, I actually witnessed an accountant type in a bunch of sales order values into an Excel spreadsheet and then use an actual calculator to add up the total!
I am a Co-Founder of The Audit Toolbar, with my incredible partner Christiaan Coetzee. I am not an accountant, but I work with accountants, and I serve accountants. Through my eyes I bring a new and different perspective to addressing the challenges in what is unarguably one of the oldest industries around (over 7000 years in fact!! See here)
I love engaging with accountants and witnessing the profound experiences they have when they realise that there is a “better way”. I could wax lyrical with metaphors about horses and cars, stairs and escalators, axes and chainsaws, maps and GPS and so on, but what I do know is that major advancements in technology have allowed massive, positive progress to be made in auditing and accounting.
To create the confidence to embrace any innovation and change, a person has to have trust and faith. When you get to see and know who is behind an innovation and truly understand why they are doing it and if their mission has integrity (and most do!), it becomes much easier to have faith and trust. I love businesses that follow my three P’s….. Purpose, Passion and Profit and in that order; they are normally always successful.
Since the leap from manual bookkeeping to accounting and financial software, largely thanks to Scott Cook and Tom Proulx (the guys whose passion for change founded Intuit back in the early 80’s), technology in accounting and finance has continued to relentlessly advance in the pursuit of making our lives easier. There is a plethora of amazing and innovative technologies out there and naturally The Audit Toolbar sits squarely in the middle of this.
I would encourage every accountant to get up from behind your screen, take a fresh breath and go out and explore the innovations that are there. You will honestly be amazed and it’s not that scary; I promise!
