It’s 2007. Satnavs exist, but Dave doesn’t trust them.
“I know where I’m going,” he says, as he confidently takes the third wrong turn in a row.
His wife, Karen, sits in the passenger seat, arms crossed, lips pursed, watching familiar landmarks reappear. They’ve now passed the same Esso garage three times.
“Just pull over and ask someone,” she insists (again).
“I don’t need to. We’re nearly there,” Dave replies, squinting hopefully for a pub he swears used to be here.
What Dave’s actually doing is burning fuel, time, and goodwill. He’s got his fingers firmly crossed that Lady Luck will flag him down and show him he’s been on the right road all along.
She doesn’t, so he just loops one more time, praying his destination will present itself.
We’ve all got a bit of Dave in us.
Logical, determined, maybe a little stubborn.
You hit a tricky accounting issue and think, “I’m sure I know this. I’ll just give it one more go”.
Then another.
And another.
And before you know it, you’ve lost hours down a rabbit hole, chasing a solution which could’ve been solved in minutes.
If you’d only asked someone.
For all you Dave’s, here’s a rule to follow.
“Try solving an issue twice, then ask for help”.
Not ten times. Not until you’ve exhausted every idea Google’s given you.
Twice.
Then walk over (or Slack over) to a colleague and say,
“Hey, here’s what I’ve tried, what do you think?”
It’s not a weakness. It’s smart.
You save time, you save sanity, and who knows, you might actually get it solved much faster because you’ve got a fresh set of eyes helping you out.
This isn’t about being lazy. It’s about being efficient.
Auditors don’t have time to drive round the loop all day looking for the signpost. You know the one, “You can’t miss it”.
You’ve got files to clear and clients to chase.
Get unstuck faster, and everyone will thank you.
Your client who wants their offices back.
Your boss who’s got timesheets to explain.
And your colleagues who want to get home in time for kick off.
Have a great week ahead.
Regards,
Christiaan.
