The room is sparkling. Glasses clink. Laughter hums. You lean back, thinking: this one went smoothly.
Then it happens. A hand lifts. A voice clears:
“Excuse me… could I see the receipt for the bread rolls?”
The fizz in your glass goes flat. You’re no longer the host. You’re the cashier, itemising carbs in front of twenty guests.
Auditors know this feeling. The week shines, numbers tied, deadlines hit, clients reassured. Then Friday at 6 p.m. arrives. The glow dies. Suddenly you’re hunched over Excel, explaining bread rolls to Monday-you. And that’s when Sunday starts to feel heavy.
Here’s the truth: it’s not the bread rolls that kill the moment. It’s the missing story. Without narrative, even the smallest request for proof unravels the magic.
That’s why I started using Friday Future Notes. It’s the simplest ritual I know, but it has changed how I work and how I rest.
Here’s how it plays out. You’re about to log off. Your mouse is already hovering over “shut down.” But before you close the laptop, you pause. You flip to the tab you’ve been working on and write three things for Monday-you. Not a vague to-do list, but a mini storyline: what’s already finished, what still matters, and what’s blocking progress.
It takes less time than scrolling LinkedIn, but it changes everything. Sunday-you can actually rest, because the loop is closed. Monday-you opens the file and doesn’t waste thirty minutes trying to remember what “Rev-S1 FINAL (v3).xlsx” was supposed to mean. And your reviewer? They walk into a file that reads like a story, not a mystery.
Do it week after week and the ripple effect is huge. Write-downs shrink. Reviews get smoother. Partners trust the trail. Teams feel calmer, because there’s less chaos and more narrative.
And when you drop those Future Notes directly into your working papers with The Audit Toolbar, it’s not just a personal hack. It becomes a firm-wide system. Reviewers can pick up where you left off. Partners see clarity. Clients see consistency. A five-minute ritual becomes a culture shift.
So here’s my challenge: try it this Friday. Leave yourself a roadmap before you log off. Then time yourself when you pick it back up on Monday. Did it save you thirty minutes? Did it make your Sunday lighter? Reply and tell me, I’d love to share the best stories in the next issue.
Because sparkle without structure always fades. But when the menu is clear, you get to serve champagne, hand over receipts, and still sit down to eat.
Until next week,
Christiaan
