For over a century, archaeologists working in the dense jungles of Cambodia faced an impossible task.
They knew ancient cities were out there, hidden beneath the tropical canopy near Angkor Wat. But finding them required swinging machetes through thick, humid foliage, mapping the ground yard by grueling yard. They endured the mud, the heat, and the endless manual effort, convinced that the sheer physical struggle was the only way to uncover the truth.
Then, in 2012, someone decided to stop swinging the machete and change the technology.
They attached a LIDAR scanner to a helicopter and flew over the canopy. The system fired hundreds of thousands of laser pulses down into the forest, filtering out the leaves and branches to map the exact contours of the earth below.
In a matter of hours, the laser stripped away the jungle.
What it revealed was staggering: vast, perfectly engineered ancient megacities sitting right beneath their feet. The ruins weren't lost. They were just obscured by the noise of the forest.
When I look at modern auditing, I see a profession still trapped in the jungle, swinging machetes.
When a client hands you a scrambled 300-page PDF bank statement or a messy batch of unstructured invoices, what is your first instinct? You grab your digital machete. You start manually hacking away at the foliage. You retype line items, you build fragile text-to-columns formulas, and you spend days squinting at bad scans trying to carve out a clean version.
We have convinced ourselves that this administrative exhaustion is the actual rigor of the audit. We think that if our eyes aren't bleeding from cross-referencing the crosses, we aren't doing the work.
But formatting unstructured data isn't auditing. It's just fighting the jungle.
You don't need a sharper machete. You need to strip away the canopy.
Stop hacking blindly through the undergrowth. Map the city.
Until next week,
