It is a bizarre, high-tech version of building a skyscraper with a plastic shovel, all because we are scared to let go of the safety of the manual grind. But here is the truth Arthur could never accept: the friction is not the function.
This month, we have toured the "Hall of Audit Horrors" from the abacus to the jamming gears of the Comptometer to prove one simple point: the history of our profession is essentially a catalogue of people who were terrified to put down their manual tools.
