Welcome to July. The second half of the year.
The dust of H1 has settled, which means we are standing at a natural pivot point. We have a choice: we can either drag the exact same exhaustion into the next six months, or we can take a breath, look at how we work, and decide to evolve.
Let’s take a quick trip back to ancient Sumeria, roughly 2700 BC. If you were a merchant tracking agricultural inventory or calculating regional taxes, you relied on the absolute cutting-edge financial technology of the era: the abacus.
It was an architectural masterpiece of early mathematics. It was tactile, relentless in its efficiency, and so profoundly effective that variations of it remained the dominant business tool across global markets for over four millennia. For the ancient merchant, it was the only tool required to get the job done.
Technology, thankfully, evolved. But human stubbornness? Not so much.
Imagine this scenario: You walk into your client’s boardroom today to kick off an engagement. You nod confidently, reach into your laptop bag, and proudly slam a wooden bead-frame onto the mahogany table.
You would be laughed out of the building. Sounds ridiculous, right?
But here is the uncomfortable truth: while our infrastructure has evolved to the cloud, mentally, a lot of us haven't evolved past the beads. We often tackle massive, complex modern data relying purely on sheer willpower and basic manual habits. We treat enterprise-level challenges with consumer-level effort, hoping our sheer optimism will get us through the reporting cycle.
It is the ultimate form of unearned DIY confidence. It’s like walking onto a commercial construction site to install a massive water reservoir armed with nothing but pure optimism and an 18-volt cordless hand drill. You might get a few fittings together, but the moment the system experiences real pressure, the whole thing falls apart.
When you are spending your weekends doing emergency maintenance on your own work papers instead of actually analysing risk, you aren't auditing anymore. You are fighting the friction of a tool that was never designed for the scale of the job. We upgraded our hardware, but we stubbornly refused to upgrade our methodology.
You cannot build enterprise-level workflows with manual habits.
It is time to leave the digital abacus behind.
Until next week,
Christiaan
P.S We’ve built the industrial-grade infrastructure so you don't have to muscle through the friction, allowing you to actually enjoy the work you were hired to do. Upgrade your workflow from basic hand tools to heavy-duty by watching the walkthrough here.
